Victoria and environs

Saturday, 28 June we packed up and left Victoria, heading for Long Beach, on the west coast of the Island. Took a stop in Chemainus, a logging town famous for developing a series of murals as a tourist attraction to boost the economy when a logging mill shut down. We took a tour of the murals in a horse-drawn buggy, which the kids loved.

After enjoying an icecream, we climbed back into the van and headed up the coast and across the island to Long Beach. That first day we just set up the tent as it was getting late by the time we got there. We spent six nights there, each day enjoying one of the beaches in the Pacific Rim National Park or one of the towns, Tofino or Ucluelet.

Long Beach is famous for its large waves providing great surfing. We saw lots of surfers there, and the kids were keen to try it out, but I said they had to be able to swim well first!!

We had a couple of quite nice days on the Beach, but most of the time it was somewhat cloudy and cool, and quite windy.
