Campbell River

From Long Beach, we headed east across the Island again, then a ways north to Campbell River where my cousin, MP, lives. She is one of my oldest cousins with grown kids living in BC and Alberta. Her husband wasn't home, unfortunately, so we missed Joker, but the kids and I had a good time with MP. Actually, the kids loved it at her place - she runs a home daycare so her house and yard are filled with toys!!!

We spent two nights at MP's house. On Saturday 5 July we went for a short hike and picnic at Elk Falls Provincial Park, just outside the town, with some impressive falls plunging 25m into the Campbell River canyon.

After the park, we went to the beach in search of "critters." We found a few, though not as many as I'd remembered seeing in the past during a visit to Campbell River. A few starfish and a few sand dollars.

The town was in the midst of "Transformations on the Shore," an annual driftwood carving competition held in association with Canada Day and now in its 12th year. Several dozen impressive carvings were displayed along the shoreline. We walked along the beach, surveying them all. They were uniformly beautiful and inspiring. Many of the carvings from past years are scattered about the town, providing beautiful pieces of public art for residents and visitors to enjoy.

This is not my best shot, but it's one of the few that isn't sideways...
