Beachcombers - aka Gibsons BC

Anybody else out there remember The Beachcombers? I watched it occasionally when I was a child, back in the dark ages. (Actually, it aired until 1990 - the longest-running Canadian TV show ever! - so some of you youngsters might remember it too.) I recall my parents really enjoyed it. Well, on our trip down the Sunshine Coast, we spent two nights in Gibsons, where that old TV show was set. I hadn't realized we were going to such a historic place! (lol)

We stayed at a local hostel that we actually found through this neat listing called Mennonite Your Way - a directory of Mennonites (and others) around the world (though mostly in the US and Canada) of people willing to open their homes and take in guests for a night or two for a modest payment. Sometimes you get a bed, sometimes a sofa, sometimes floor space... You just find a listing in the directory, contact the person and ask if they can host you for your chosen nights. (I'm also in the directory and have hosted a number of people from across Canada and as far away as Germany and France!)

The hostel operator, Paul, was an easy-going chap, of Finnish origin but with a Mennonite girlfriend (that's how he learned about the directory). He was a fisherman - though with the state of fishing these days he hasn't taken the boat out for over a year. Still, he showed us his boat and we had the run of his large property which he hopes to develop as a campground (needs some work and cleaning up to really work).

We spent a day exploring the town, mostly hanging out at the harbour and trying to catch fish, or walking along the beach and chasing crabs and whatever other critters happened to be around.
