Winter holiday

We spent the past week at a local ski resort.

I took the kids out of school for the last week before Christmas and we drove up on Monday morning. It was a warm, rainy day – not great if you’re hoping to have good skiing. We arrived just before noon and settled into our accommodations, which were spacious and pleasant, though we did notice a small white mouse on the premises.

We had a good view of the ski hill from the dining/living room. (My parents, being used to the Rocky Mountains, said this reminded them of Rabbit Hill, a ski hill near Edmonton where my friends used to go as teens to get in some skiing that wasn’t a four-hour drive away. Nobody out there considered it anything special. For real skiing you had to go to the mountains.)

That afternoon, what with the rain, we mostly explored the grounds a bit and spent an hour or so in the swimming pool and hot tub. Tuesday morning was colder, but still we didn’t attempt skiing as I figured the conditions wouldn’t be great. The kids did some tobogganing on the lower slopes where the ski runs weren’t yet open, and we played some games and again made good use of the pool and hot tub.

Tuesday night it snowed, and the resort had been hard at work making snow, so Wednesday morning we got out to the hill fairly early and rented skis for the kids.

On the way there we saw a family of otters enjoying a dip and a feed at the little pond between the parking lot and the ski hill.

That day they stuck to the bunny hill and both of them practiced their balance and turns. Mustang, as usual, did just great. Button began the day just barrelling down the hill, but by the end of the day he, too, was doing better at turns and controlling his stopping so as to come to a halt right at the bottom of the lift.

Thursday was another day of skiing. The morning we stuck to the bunny hill again, but for the afternoon I figured both kids would appreciate (and be able to handle) a run down the real slopes. Seeing as neither Laolao, Laoye nor I ski, I just went up to the lift and asked a man skiing with his young daughter whether he would be willing to accompany the kids down the hill. He took them down twice, then as they wanted to do amore challenging run and I didn’t think Button would be quite up to it (he was game, but I figured he needed to have a bit better control first!), I asked two young Asian women I’d seen coming down the easy run. They took the kids down three times and by then it was almost time to return the rental skis.

Friday morning, after packing up, Laoye took the kids for one last swim before we headed home. All in all it was a good, relaxing pre-Christmas holiday that was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Afternoon with friends

Right at the end of summer we met up with a couple of Ethiopian adoptive family friends (who couldn’t make it to the gathering a couple of weeks earlier). One of the families lives on a farm about an hour’s drive from the city and has all kinds of animals rescued from animal shelters. Since Mustang LOVES animals, I invited our family out to the farm. Finney made it a super fun afternoon by inviting SK and her gang of four, as well as Finney’s sister and her kids.

It was a gorgeous late August afternoon. We basked in the sun (and shade, when it got too hot).

The kids (and a few grown-ups) got a soccer game going in the yard. Everyone said Button was a pro – get your autographs now!!

Then there was the pond, complete with frogs…

After playing we had a lovely supper with Ethiopian food made by SK’s nanny.

Then the three of us headed over to Finney’s sister’s place, a short drive away, because she had HORSES!! Each of the kids took a turn riding the pony bareback (being led).

Magical Monday

There is magic in pictures, isn’t there?? So rather than Wordless Wednesday, I will have a Magical Monday. (Seeing as I just can’t stand copying other people… haha.)

Best buddies united

I finally got my latest two rolls of film developed. Dating from early August (still out west) until late October.

Rather than deluge you with pictures now – and because who knows when I’ll get the next film(s) developed!! – I’m going to spread these out over the next several weeks. So you’ll be getting a bit of history mixed in with the current affairs.

As mentioned before, we visited a couple of Button’s Ethiopian friends during our summer holiday out west. I just got the film with our second visit developed, so here are a few pictures of our visit with Jay’s family.

Jay was Button’s bunkmate back at the Transition House, and one of his best friends, so I'd been planning a visit ever since I discovered jay was heading out west. The boys definitely recognized each other, but I was a little bit surprised that they didn’t start playing together right away – not quite the same “buzz” as when we visited Kenean’s family. It took a bit of an “easing in” time.

On the other hand, I wasn’t totally surprised as the boys hadn’t seen each other for seven months, which is a long time when you’re five years old. Jay joined his family in April or May, so he was still at an early stage of learning English and adjusting to his family. But he didn’t seem to be having any problems, and his mom said he was very eager to see Gutton again!

Holidays: A kid's-eye view

Before we left, I gave each of the kids a single-use camera for them to use. When the first one filled up, I got them each another.

This was done in part to give them an alternative to using my camera, which Button especially likes to do, as I don't particularly care to spend tons of money developing film with 22 out of 25 shots being of "nothing in particular"!

A good part of the time they would forget aobut them, but then - especially when there were animals to be photographed - Mustang would haul hers out, so of course Button would follow suit, and they'd go trigger-happy.

Of the supposedly 108 possible pictures (27 x 4) these ones are among the best (i.e. the ones where you can actually see something recognizable). (I'm actualy not thrilled with the quality of these cameras: a lot of the shots didn't turn out at all. But that might in part be because they kept forgetting that to use the flash you had to hold down an extra button... And in part because fingers kept getting in the way...)
