This question was posed to me by Giggles this morning at breakfast.
In a family like ours, one must be prudent… But then again, it should be obvious, shouldn't it?
Canada!” I said, “Because we live in Canada and it’s a great country with lots of great people.”
"My favourites are Canada and China,” Giggles pronounced. “But not Ethiopia.”
No comment. For now.
I’ve talked to her about how we’re going to go to Ethiopia to bring home her little brother or sister. We’ve read a couple of kids books introducing Ethiopian people and culture. And food and animals and holidays and you name it. I’ve pointed the country out on the map.
Of course, a transition to being a big sister is a big thing for a little girl, especially when it means travelling halfway around the world and that she’ll need to share Mommy (and Laolao and Laoye). Not to mention that it might evoke memories or thoughts or feelings about when we travelled halfway around the world to bring her home and what all that meant in terms of gain and loss, old and new, same and different.
So who knows why this morning she didn’t like Ethiopia. But I expect she will, with time and patience and getting to know it – or little sibling – better.
