The dough
Ingredients
- 5ml sugar (1 teaspoon)
- 65ml warm water (1/4 cup)
- 1 package dry yeast (5 ml or 1 teaspoon)
- 375ml water (1.5 cups)
- 375ml milk (1.5 cups)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 tablespoon butter
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 2 cups raisins
- flour
- Dissolve the 5ml sugar in the 60ml warm water; sprinkle yeast on top and let stand 10 minutes.
- Add remaining ingredients - including enough flour to make a fairly thick batter.
- Let rise in a warm place (such as an oven with the oven light turned on) until double in bulk (roughly an hour).
- Drop by spoonsful into hot, deep fat and fry till golden brown.
- Sprinkle with icing sugar and serve (or serve as is with a bowl of icing sugar for people to dip in their own).

mmmm! I love these! My grandma and mom always made them for New Years and I didn't know what they were called. We always called them New Years Cookies...but we coated them in granulated sugar not powdered sugar. My husband's family who are dutch would coat them in powdered sugar.
